Report: Power Companies Block Rooftop Solar Growth in FL, US

Image
A new report shows an effort by investor-owned utilities in the Sunshine State to block the growth of rooftop solar. The Environment Florida Research & Policy Center report follows a money trail, claiming utilities have spent millions to undercut the advances in solar power, in Florida and six other states, and at the federal level. Ryann Lynn, climate and clean energy advocate with the Center, said the companies’ main targets have been to restrict or eliminate net-metering programs. Net metering allows private solar users to get credit for energy they add to the grid. Lynn said utility companies also add new, fixed charges to solar-power systems. “We’ve also found financial records showing that this money goes for putting together front groups to put out reports claiming that pro-solar policies hurt customers,” said Lynn, “or that some policy that is helpful to the growth of solar should be changed for some reason.” Other groups, like the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy

A virus reducing partner in ‘Covid World’ to outsmart Covid. A groundbreaking range of wearables which uses virus neutralising technology to kill off Covid-19 and other infectious diseases like the flu and norovirus has been launched by a UK based company. Akhand Armour says its technology, which it has initially rolled out on a range of face masks , sanitising face mask pocket cases, glasses cases, shopping bags and mobile phone cases , reduces virus transference by neutralising landed infected droplets and removing them from circulation. Disguised as everyday wear, the wearables have been independently tested and certified at MSL, a UK microbiological testing laboratory and are the first to achieve an ISO certification for non-medical face masks and wearables. Founder Meena Hanspal said: “As soon as infected drople

Breaking Down the Facts on Breakthrough COVID Cases

Image
As COVID cases trend upward again, public-health experts are setting the record straight on certain storylines about new infections. Minnesota ‘s seven-day average for new COVID cases had dipped below 100 earlier this summer. Now, it’s nearing 300 . Health officials blame the combination of the Delta variant spreading and a slower rate of vaccinations. For some who elected to get the shots, there are instances of infections. But David Dowdy, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health , said the vaccines still work; there are just some key things to remember. “They give your immune system a jump-start on the virus, but every now and then, that jump-start is not quite enough to prevent an infection,” he said. “Almost always, it’s going to be enough to prevent you from getting really, really sick.” He said no vaccine is perfect. However, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted that fewer than 1% of COVID deaths and hospitalizat

Supporters of the 30 Million Solar Homes Initiative said boosting participation in the Rural Energy Savings Program and Energy Efficiency and Conservation Loan Program could help more residents, farmers, and small businesses finance solar panels. Robert Fernatt, advisor to Solar United Neighbors and president of the West Virginia Electric Auto Association, said more West Virginians are seeing the benefits of clean energy. “National-security advocates, faith-based groups, people that are interested in personal energy independence, disaster preparedness,” Fernatt outlined. “We like to say that solar has a large tent: it attracts a lot of different people for different reasons that we can all get behind. ” More than 300 energy equity, climate, business , environmental , faith, and public health organizations

Double Up Food Bucks Program Boosts Farmer’s Markets

Image
After a new state law expanded eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the program formerly known as food stamps, more Nebraskans could start receiving food assistance as early as this week, and a growing number of food producers and farmer’s markets are hoping some of those federal dollars will end up in their pockets. Eric Savaiano, economic justice program manager for Nebraska Appleseed, said the incentive program known as Double Up Food Bucks is a great way for families to access locally grown, nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables to fuel kids’ summer activities. “The Double Up Food Bucks is part of the SNAP program that allows participants to go to local farmer’s markets and retailers and double their money,” Savaiano explained. “They can spend up to $20 and get $40 worth of produce.” Last session, lawmakers expanded eligibility for SNAP to eliminate the so-called cliff effect, where workers who get small pay increases lose hundreds of dollars

Parents Urged: Complete School Meal Forms Even Though Lunches are Free

Image
School meals in Maine will be free for all students again this year and into the future, but parents are being urged to fill out meal benefit forms anyway. The income information is linked to other resources school districts can access, from funding for Title I to after-school and summer programs and special education. The U.S. Department of Agriculture extended its free breakfast and lunch program through the 2021 to 2022 school year , and the Maine Legislature included free school meals for the future in the budget bill passed earlier this month. Anna Korsen, advocacy director for Full Plates Full Potential, said while families don’t need to worry about being eligible for school meals, other state and federal resources are needed for students to thrive. “It’s a big piece of helping your school,” Korsen asserted. “And it’s a way that families can make sure that all students in their school districts have access to educational resources, nutrition resources.” Korsen added befor

Groups Urge Swift Funding After Court Upholds Medicaid Expansion

Image
Health-care advocates called on Missouri lawmakers to allocate funds for Medicaid expansion right away, after the state Supreme Court ruled they must extend coverage to the 275,000 people who fall into what’s known as the Medicaid gap. That means they have incomes above their state’s eligibility for Medicaid , but cannot afford marketplace or employer-based insurance. John McDonald, a retired carpenter who falls in the gap, said while the Legislature has played what he calls “political ping pong” with Medicaid expansion, he and many others are waiting on critical medical care, and emphasized expansion is going to be life-changing. “I’m going to be able to live a longer life because I’ll have insurance to go to the doctors,” McDonald explained. “I can’t get a CT scan, I can’t get any of these things done for myself, because they’re so expensive. They’re thousands of dollars.” Lawmakers in Jefferson City have resisted funding expansion, even after voters approved it as a Constitutio

Congress Takes Action on Toxic “Forever Chemicals”

Image
A bill to tackle contamination from so-called “forever chemicals” known as Perfluorinated and Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS) is moving through Congress . PFAS is used in a range of consumer products and linked to a variety of health problems. The chemical essentially does not degrade, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , most Americans have PFAS in their blood. Sonya Lunder, senior toxics policy advisor for the Sierra Club, explained PFAS contamination has been on the radar of environmental advocates for decades, but federal regulators didn’t start paying attention until the turn of the century, when evolving research uncovered the prevalence of chemicals. “It’s been maddening for environmental advocates, because PFAS chemicals are used so widely in things like microwave popcorn bags, or to make fabrics or rugs stain resistant,” Lunder stressed. “However, the chemicals in the environment build up in our food. They’re in the water we drink. They li

If You Can’t Stand the Heat, Step Down from the Bulldozer

Image
People across the Midwest, including Iowans , have dealt with a series of heat waves this summer. Health experts say hotter weather is harder on the heart, and outdoor construction workers need to be extra mindful. Cities like Des Moines, Waterloo and Sioux City are expected to see temperatures well above 90 degrees in the next several days, prompting reminders for vulnerable populations to protect themselves from the hot and humid conditions. Lisa Leighton, senior project controls manager for the construction firm Ryan Companies, said workers on building sites should know the dangers, too. “Construction workers are more susceptible to heat strokes and heat exhaustion, due to the fact that they’re working outside,” Leighton explained. “And workers in the construction industry have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease than employees in other fields.” She cited findings from the American Heart Association (AHA), which works with companies like Ryan on the “ Hard Hats with

Report: 30M Solar Homes Could Boost Jobs, Benefit Environment

Image
With federal investment , a proposal to connect 30 million homes in the United States to solar energy could have a big impact in addressing climate change , reducing inequity and rebuilding the economy hit by the pandemic. That’s according to a new report from researchers behind the “ 30 Million Solar Homes Initiative .” The report found with the right policies in place, a solar program of this size would be comparable to closing 48 coal-fired power plants for a year, and lead to $69 billion in energy savings over the next five years. Report coauthor Katie Kienbaum – senior researcher at the Energy Democracy Initiative at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance – said it also would create 1.7 million jobs across the country. “The jobs potential is really just huge from rooftop and community solar systems,” said Kienbaum. “It takes a lot more people to scramble on rooftops, put those solar panels up, versus building them in a huge field. And that would also, you know, happen in commu

More Calls for Pathway to Citizenship for Undocumented Immigrants

Image
Immigrants’ rights advocates are calling on Congress to pave the way to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people in the U.S. Daniel Pereira, director of communications for the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, said last week’s federal court ruling from Texas halting new applications to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program amplifies how urgent it is for lawmakers to take action. He argued protection from deportation with a pathway to citizenship should be extended to those with Temporary Protected Status, as well as any other people residing without legal status. “As this ruling shows, it’s not enough,” Pereira asserted. “We need something more permanent, more stable and more viable in the long term. So we would really love to see, for the broader population of immigrants in the United States, a pathway to citizenship over the long term.” Pereira noted the ruling leaves DACA recipients with uncertainty, but does not cancel pe
