Energy Companies Developing Infrastructure, Grid to Power Electric Vehicles

Image
For some time, electric vehicles have been seen as the wave of the future, but developments in Detroit, Stuttgart, and Nagoya suggest tomorrow has arrived. After a period of hesitancy, carmakers are now moving at full speed to put nonpolluting EVs in American garages, and energy companies are planning to roll out the charging infrastructure to power the new technology. This is National Drive Electric Week , and automakers and power companies are preparing for the transformation. Brian Wheeler, media relations manager for Consumers Energy , said things are happening quickly. “For Consumers Energy and other energy providers, this is the time for us to prepare,” Wheeler explained. “We know that if we have about 25,000 EVs that we serve today, that number should climb to about 1 million by 2030. So that really gives you a sense of that growth.” Wheeler expects it will take several years before carmakers move from gas and hybrid cars to producing only fully-electric vehicles, but powe

Lawsuit Goes to Court Alleging Cell Phones Cause Brain Tumors

Image
Evidentiary hearings are underway in a Washington, D.C. , courtroom this week, to decide if a massive lawsuit against the cellphone industry will be allowed to go to trial. Multiple families are suing most of the major wireless companies and their trade association, asking for hundreds of millions in damages, claiming cellphone use causes brain tumors. Monique Solomon Martinazzi, a plaintiff whose husband Andy passed away at age 43, said he had a brain tumor which developed right where he used to hold his cellphone. “When cellphones first came out he got one of the original battery-held Motorolas,” Solomon Martinazzi recounted. “And it was held to his ear 6-7 hours a day. He was in commercial real estate. And we just felt so strongly that was the reason the brain tumor developed where it did.” The industry trade association and Motorola did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but they have said their products are safe and comply with all government standards. The law

Will Pesticide Enforcement Get Caught Up in Trade Talks?

Image
The U.S. is talking with several nations as part of an emerging framework for trade policy , and in the Midwest, there are concerns about the ripple effect on farmers and consumers when it comes to pesticides. The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework involves more than a dozen countries and has four negotiating pillars, including decarbonization and anti-corruption. Steve Suppan, senior policy analyst at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, said while there are motivations to move away from standard trade ideals, influence from large agribusiness firms still might complicate things. Pesticides are one of them. “Some of the IPEF countries have pesticide policies that are rejecting US imports that have pesticide residues on horticulture and grain exports,” Suppan observed. He predicted it will lead to calls for the elimination of “zero tolerance” policies, with companies arguing they will disrupt the delivery of food. There is added concern the discussions will happen behind

Clean Planet Energy secures supply agreement with World’s Largest Plastics Recycler

Image
Clean Planet Energy ’s North American division has today announced a long term agreement with the world’s largest recycler of HDPE and PP rigid plastic, KW Plastics. The agreement will provide plastic scrap to Clean Planet’s new ecoPlant, to be built in Alabama. KW Plastics is the world’s largest plastics recycler for HDPE and PP. KW Plastics produce a wide range of polyethylene and polypropylene recycled resins for the personal care, automotive, agriculture, construction, pipe, paint & coatings, recreation, and flexible packaging/sheet applications industries. The announcement today will mean up to 20,000 tons of plastic residue generated at the current KW Plastics facility in Alabama will be turned into re-usable circular products, rather than being sent to landfill. The circular products produced at a Clean Planet ecoPlant can either be circular petrochemical feedstocks (which is used to generate new plastics), or ultra-low sulphur fuels (used to lower greenhouse gas emission

Corporate changes force managers to juggle different views of fairness

Image
Middle-managers get caught between different stakeholders’ perceptions of fair treatment in reaction to corporate changes, reveals new research from Aalto University School of Business . According to Associate Professor Marjo-Riitta Diehl , from the Department of Management Studies, and her co-authors, these managers can often experience uncertainty, anxiety, and reluctance to take action as a result. The research found having to navigate the conflicting perspectives of peers, senior management, and subordinates often causes managers to experience guilt over decisions they have made which they feel were unjust. The researchers also found that sometimes managers had to navigate a discrepancy between the organisation’s strategic needs and their duty of care to their individual employees. In response, they can be, among other things, motivated to discreetly recompense employees they feel they have treated unfairly before changing to a role without managerial responsibilities. This is

New Study Adds to Concerns About Diminishing Lake Ice Cover

Image
Minnesotans are preparing for another winter, and a new global study raises questions about how colder climates might see fewer days of ice cover on lakes. The findings in the journal Nature Communications showed lakes in the Northern Hemisphere have seen ice melts happen sooner by an average of eight days, and the authors pointed to climate change. Jerry Grundtner, president of the Forest Lake Lake Association, said recent ice-outs have varied, with some stretching into early May. But he added it is fair to think about the possibility of future issues. “Earlier ice out means that vegetation has a more robust opportunity to grow more thick during the summer months,” Grundtner explained. “It also allows, I think, the water temperature to increase to a higher temperature, which causes more algae.” Researchers at the University of Minnesota have also been sounding the alarm about the links between a warming climate and the conditions of northern lakes. A study from last year found

Economic Pressure Builds Ahead of Elections in Tribal Areas

Image
The economy is usually a big topic during elections. With the midterms near, recent inflation woes are especially felt in tribal areas, and Indigenous leaders in North Dakota hope it spurs turnout. A recent national poll found 63% of Indigenous voters were experiencing serious financial problems. Douglas Yankton, chairman of the Spirit Lake Nation, said inflation has affected programs providing an array of services on his reservation. Even though some of the pressure has eased, the ripple effect is still there. “A lot of those services don’t go as far as they used to,” Yankton explained. “Let’s say transportation for instance, with the prices of gas and oil and everything, we have to figure out new routes to accommodate for that full week.” He added COVID is still a concern. Cases were disproportionately felt by Native populations, and Yankton pointed out local businesses are hurting with some residents worried about close contact, limiting their ability to work or shop. Despite

Why Send Cubans to Delaware — or Anywhere?

Image
State Senate candidate Brian Moore is registered Green, but does not have our endorsement. Green Party of Florida counters his press release , “Cubans should be sent to Delaware!.” Moore applauded Lt. Governor Nunez’s statement that all new Cuban immigrants would be sent from Florida to Delaware. “Finally,” Moore said, “Florida [would] treat all immigrants, including their ‘privileged Cubans,’ equal[ly].” The desire of Moore and Nunez to export Cuban arrivals completely misses the elephant in the room: the 60-year-old Cuban blockade, which is economic warfare and violates international law. DeSantis ‘ administration plays immigrants like political pawns while Moore views Cubans as freeloaders. Neither address decades-old issues underlying immigration . We should handle immigrants with respect and dignity, recognizing their historical and ongoing contributions to our country. It’s ironic/hypocritical that immigration is often fueled by the US’s own violent interventions supportin

Def Leppard’s Rick Savage pours some sugar on the fashion industry

The premium collection is set to drop today, 22nd September 2022. Overnight Angels Crew is a brand conceptualised by Rock Legend and bass guitarist of Def Leppard, Rick Savage. How Climate Friendly is Your 401(k)?

Image
As states like North Dakota debate whether to stay committed to fossil fuels, an online scorecard gives people with retirement accounts a glimpse into what role their investment portfolio plays in keeping the industry funded. The nonprofit As You Sow is out with its latest Fossil Free Funds ratings. Andrew Montes, director of digital strategy for As You Sow, said they grade investment firms based on which energy sources their funds are linked to. He added it might not be as obvious to most account holders. “Just to use one from a major asset manager, from Vanguard, within the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, you’re going to find investments in JPMorgan Chase,” Montes explained. “JPMorgan Chase is the highest lender to fossil fuels over the last few years.” While some of Vanguard’s funds get higher grades, a significant portion received “D” and “F” grades, including its most common plans. In the past year, fossil-fuel company stocks have netted returns, even in a down market. But some b

Environmental Groups Fight to Stop Mine Near Okefenokee

Image
Environmental groups are calling on Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division to reject permits to build a titanium mine near an intact freshwater wetland system known as the Okefenokee Swamp, which extends into Florida . The up-and-down battle to protect the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has perplexed many because of new murky U.S. wetland policies formed under the Trump administration. Ultimately, Twin Pines Minerals Company successfully sued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which dropped its federal protections of the swamp in a settlement. Christian Hunt, Southeast program representative for Defenders of Wildlife , said he was shocked to see the Corps flip-flop, allowing the mining company to move forward with plans to mine on more than 500 acres at the edge of the largest U.S. National Wildlife Refuge east of the Mississippi, if it gets state approval. “We think this is an inappropriate neighbor,” Hunt asserted. “It’s an inconsistent land use adjacent to this world

Remote Jobs Are ‘Winning’ The Great Resignation

Image
The saying goes that where one door closes, another opens, and this is precisely why remote jobs are “winning” in the Great Resignation, says Joseph Boll, RemoteWorker.jobs CEO. Remote Worker is a jobs board and digital recruitment service designed to help hiring managers and businesses connect with job seeking professionals for remote work positions . Its CEO has consistently maintained that remote work is here to stay and has cautioned employers not to do themselves a disservice by refusing to adapt accordingly. “The Great Resignation has not stopped,” notes Boll. “But studies have found that it’s more of a ‘Great Reshuffle’ because most workers are not exiting the workforce but rather going to work for competitors. And with more Americans demanding remote work, this means that when your best employee leaves, they’re likely going to work for a company that will give them the remote work options they want. Right now, remote companies are getting the best employees.” Compounded wit

Experts Urge Checkups for Florida Kids, Including Mental Health

Image
Experts are reminding parents to schedule time to get health screenings for kids – and to also think beyond the basic back-to-school physical. There’s so much to think about for safeguarding kids’ health, and Dr. Candice Jones – a board-certified, Orlando-based pediatrician – said parents should enlist a doctor’s help so they don’t have to navigate any health complications alone. Jones said a doctor can help with monitoring mental and behavioral changes for a child who’s had a difficult time through the pandemic. She said a wellness check should be comprehensive . “That maybe parent don’t think about to make sure things are being done,” said Jones. “‘Have you seen the dentist? Have you had an eye check? Are you going to play some sports? Oh, we need to do a sports pre-participation clearance for that as well, which would also require a cardiac screen if you’re at the middle- or high-school level.'” A pediatrician can also ask questions specific to a child’s age to make sure
