Groups Say FL Coasts Need Federal Dollars to Mitigate Storm Impacts

Image
Environmental groups are urging federal lawmakers to allocate $10 billion in the upcoming infrastructure package for coastal restoration projects to prevent flooding and bolster the economy. The move would have a big impact on Florida , where tidal flooding has increased by 352% since 2000. More than 100 groups have signed a letter in support of funding for coastal projects in the American Jobs Plan . Jean Flemma, director of the Ocean Defense Initiative and co-founder of the Urban Ocean, noted Florida is an area that needs these projects to start now. “Florida is ‘ground zero’ for sea-level rise, and storms that are increasing in intensity and severity,” Flemma stated. “Implementing coastal-restoration projects that provide that natural buffer against storms and rising seas will be incredibly important.” A University of California-Santa Cruz report found Florida mangroves prevented $1.5 billion worth of flood damage during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Flemma pointed out 18 of the

How Portable Laptop Bed Table Helps in Removing Back Pain

Image
People nowadays are consuming more time by looking at the screen, either for work or entertainment. When it comes to lower back pain or neck pain the first thing a doctor asks is in which posture you use your laptop or computer. Doctors suggest that if someone is using a laptop or desktop for more than 2 hours, they should position their laptop or desktop so that their eye level is one-third down to the screen. It is more important for those who are already in shoulder pain, neck pain, or lower back pain. Why Laptops are Bad For The Posture: Mostly, we place our heads in a way so that our eyes get the best position to look at the screen. A common practice while using a laptop is to place the screen lower than the eye level. To have a better view we tend to bend our head down and forward. This makes the shoulder raise and leans forward which causes muscle pain in the frontal area of the neck and the chest. This Posture reduces the natural support of the neck and back. People normall

Latinos to Governor: Don’t Play Politics with Immigration

Image
Debate continues over the severity of the migrant situation at the U.S./Mexico border, and advocates for Iowa Latinos say Gov. Kim Reynolds isn’t helping through her recent actions. Last week, Reynolds announced she’s sending Iowa State Patrol officers to the border to assist with security. Joe Henry, state political director for the Iowa League of United Latin American Citizens, said it’s part of a broader effort to overlook the needs and contributions of the nearly 200,000 immigrants in the Hawkeye State. Instead, Henry said he feels her approach is meant to grab headlines, rather than engage in helpful policy matters. “This governor, and others in the Midwest, have been using immigration and the Latino community as a political pinata in order to get votes,” said Henry. “And we’re tired of it.” Henry also criticized Reynolds for her refusal back in April to house migrant children. He said the explanation that Iowa lacked the resources runs counter to last week’s announcement,

WA First to Guarantee Right to Counsel in Eviction Cases

Image
With the threats of evictions rising as the pandemic eases, Washington state took a major step this year to protect tenants. In the 2021 session, state lawmakers passed a measure guaranteeing tenants have a right to legal counsel in eviction cases . It was the first state in the nation to pass such a bill. John Pollock, coordinator at the National Coalition for A Civil Right to Counsel called it transformative. “The movement has been very successful in the last five years at the municipal level,” said Pollock. “But Washington state was the first one to show that it could be done at the state level as well.” Pollock said Connecticut and Maryland joined Washington shortly after this bill passed and notes that at least 11 states have introduced similar legislation, signaling how mainstream this issue has become. Gov. Jay Inslee says the state will extend the eviction moratorium beyond Wednesday. Pollock said only about 3% of tenants have legal representation in eviction cases. H

Pete Wiley, an economist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, explained. “Each research reserve spends money on its operations and maintenance,” said Wiley. “Each reserve has visitors that come for the educational programming or recreational opportunities, and those visitors spend money in the local community.” The Apalachicola Reserve , known for its oysters, supports a fishery that generates $14 to $16 million ann

This Sunday is National HIV Testing Day , when people are urged to find out their HIV status and work to end the stigma around HIV and AIDS . Lamar Brown-Noguera, community relations manager for AIDS Project Worcester, said many of the group’s services were paused at the beginning of the pandemic, until it was able to get the proper personal protective equipment, and testing numbers still are not where they were pre-pandemic. Brown-Noguera emphasized the importance of staying up-to-date on sexual health, every day of the year. “Being an individual in a relationship where I have a partner who is HIV-positive, and I’m HIV negative, it’s even more of an important incentive in even my own personal life to have a regular testing and checkup routine,” Brown-Noguera explained. They added testing for HIV is available at AIDS Project Worcester on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and encouraged Commonwealth residents to reach out to their own local agency that provides te

VP Harris Visits El Paso Today in First U.S.-Mexico Border Trip

Image
Vice President Kamala Harris visits the southern border for the first time today as the Biden administration aims to stem the flow of Central American migrants seeking refuge in the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union is watching the diplomatic visit, after extending a pause on litigation brought over Title 42 , which the Trump administration leveraged to restrict migrants from entering the U.S. over public health concerns at the start of the pandemic. Shaw Drake, staff attorney and policy council for the ACLU of Texas , said ending the policy, which has pushed back 10,000 migrant families from entering the country, is more important than stopovers. “Visits are not what is important,” Drake asserted. “What is important is true policy change, in terms of turning back Trump-era abuses. So, we need to see changes to real policy that affects real people.” Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott has announced the state plans to spend $250 million to continue building a borde

Groups Call for $10 Billion to Bolster Shorelines Against Sea-Level Rise

Image
Sea levels in California are projected to rise up to 55 inches by the end of the century, so climate advocates are calling on Congress to fund coastal restoration projects to mitigate potential flooding . More than 100 groups signed a letter calling on lawmakers to include $10 billion for such projects nationwide in the proposed infrastructure bill . Seventeen-year-old Amelia Fortgang, chair of the Bay Area Youth Climate Summit and youth leadership council member at Earth Echo, said the time for action is now. “At the same time that the skies turn orange from wildfires, our coasts are moving inward,” said Fortgang. “And this is a major issue because in California 85% of our residents live and work in coastal counties.” Reports done for the Governor’s Climate Adaptation strategy predict that if nothing is done, coastal flooding could threaten $100 billion in property and infrastructure. The state already has a list of shovel-ready projects including restoration of wetlands fro

Report: Corporate-Owned Rentals Cut Into Black Homeownership

Image
Long known for its homeownership disparities, the Twin Cities region has seen a widening of the gap between Black residents and their white counterparts. A new report cites historical factors, but the rise of corporate-owned rentals isn’t helping. Research from the Urban Institute found since 2000, homeownership among Black residents in the metro area decreased by 10%, but remained steady for the white population – despite an increase in Black residents living in the region. Report coauthor Yonah Freemark, senior research associate at the Urban Institute, noted this all coincided with the rise of corporate landlords. “Companies that own at least three, but sometimes many more, single-family homes in their portfolio,” Freemark explained. “There’s some big national companies involved in that trend. But they’re particularly focused in a few very vulnerable, lower-income and minority-focused communities, like North Minneapolis.” He said investors often will charge rents higher than w

Know Whether Having A Water Based Degreaser Is A Good Idea Or Not

Image
A water based degreaser uses water as its primary solvent. It gets rid of soil particles not only by solvating contaminants but also by chemically reacting with greasy contaminants. This process makes the contaminants easily dissolvable in water. When you bring solvent, water, saponifies, and surfactants altogether in a degreaser, it is much safer than solvents and often more effective in removing even the hardened grease. Earlier, industrial degreasing and cleaning products were available as solvent-based. But it became obsolete because it was too expensive and these solvents can be evaporated rapidly. But the latest water based degreaser makes sure to solve all these problems without affecting its performance. So let us know more about the benefits of the degreaser. Benefits of water based degreaser over solvent-based To make the right choice whether to buy a water-based degreaser or not, you must know its benefit over a solvent-based degreaser. Report Suggests Gains in Child Well-Being Could be Temporary

An annual report on child well-being underscores the need in Florida for specific action to repair the damage caused by the pandemic. The Annie E. Casey Foundation Kids Count Data Book found 18% of Florida children living in poverty in 2019, which shows improvement over the last ten years. Norin Dollard, director of Florida Kids Count, noted those gains could take a hit in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as 15% of adults with children said their households sometimes or always do not have enough to eat. “We were going into it in a reasonable way, but definitely, families are struggling,” Dollard explained. “And Black and brown families are struggling disproportionately more than their white counterparts.” A closer look revealed 37% of Black households reporting not enough to eat, compared to 10% for whites and 9% for Latinos. Overall, the Kids Count Data Book ranked Florida 35th for child wellbeing. The report cited one area of improvement, as more children living with paren
