Too Long, Too Loud Can Cause Hearing Loss from Earbuds, Headphones

Image
Many people who exercise outside or at the gym use headphones or earbuds to eliminate piped-in music or other noise. But hearing experts caution against listening for too long, with the volume too loud. Hearing loss typically is associated with aging, but a recent study has found almost one in five people ages 19 to 29 already have some degree of hearing loss, due in part to listening to music nonstop through earbuds or headphones. Audiologist Claire Johnson, UnitedHealthcare’s regional manager of clinical services, said there are methods of protection. “One good recommendation or quick, easy rule that we recommend at UnitedHealthcare Hearing is a 60/60 rule,” she said, “so, limiting music to 60 minutes at a time, at 60% of the player’s maximum volume.” Johnson said hearing loss is the third most chronic condition, with 48 million Americans experiencing some hearing loss. If you listen to music while getting exercise, Johson recommended investing in noise-cancelling earbuds or he

Offshore Wind Backers: Long-Term Benefits Outweigh Costs

Image
As part of New York state’s climate goals, Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced the third competitive solicitation of offshore wind projects, with the hope of powering 1.5 million homes. This comes after Hochul committed $500 million to offshore wind development earlier this year. The state’s goal is to develop 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2035. However, it isn’t without cost to local communities, said John Polimeni, an associate professor of economics at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “With any new initiative, it is expensive to develop the ports,” he said. “If your port is not currently prepared for wind energy , you need to do some changes to the port to make it accessible and proper for wind energy.” Polimeni, who’s also a Schenectady city councilman, said the short-term costs are small compared with the longer-term benefits that come from reducing dependence on fossil fuels. One of many planned offshore wind farms in New York will be up and running in 2024,

The Perfect Storm: the Solar coaster of Stock Shortages vs a Rise in demand

Image
Renewable energy has seen a steady rise in popularity over the past couple of decades, but not many of us would have expected the recent sudden incline that’s been so severe it’s led to a mass Solar Stock Shortage. It’s hard to deny the warning signs weren’t there though… Although most of us are still in a relative degree of shock regarding the rising energy bills and fuel prices, it would be naïve to assume a range of devastating events (not least the pandemic and Ukraine crisis) would not create shockwaves across industries. Solar panel on a red roof Part 1: The rise in demand across the solar industry As mentioned, the popularity of renewable energy has been on the increase for quite some time. People have become more eco-conscious, there’s more pressure on the government to keep it green, and the reality of climate change is, that the outlook is truly bleak unless we act together and act fast. These factors alone have kept the energy industry ticking over at a healthy pace.

BNB to end the year at $274

Image
Binance Coin (BNB) is expected to end the year priced at $274, according to Finder.com’s latest Binance Coin Predictions Report . However the panel thinks the longer term prospects of the coin are strong with a 2025 prediction of $781 and 2030 prediction of $1,814 on average. CloudTech Group COO Kevin He thinks BNB will be worth $250 at the end of the year and $1,000 in 2030, commenting that the value of BNB is mainly in the support and ecosystem of Binance. “…If the centralized exchange is still the mainstream platform chosen by investors before the next bull market starts…BNB will definitely get a value boost in the next bull market. “However, if the centralized exchange is no longer mainstream or loses heat in the market before the next bull market starts, and the collapse of the centralised exchange [is] plagued by liquidity runs and cash flow problems…then BNB’s price will drop,” he explained. Thomson Reuters technologist and futurist Joseph Raczynski is slightly more bullis

ETH to drop to $675: An Ethereum Price Predictions Report

Image
Ethereum (ETH) is set to have an incredibly volatile run over the next six months, according to Finder.com’s latest Ethereum Price Predictions report . Finder’s panel of fintech and cryptocurrency specialists think Ethereum will go as high as US$2,673 and as low as $675 in 2022 before ending the year at $1,711. The panel’s longer term outlook is much brighter however, with a predicted price of $5,739 for the end of 2025 and $14,412 at the end of 2030. However, with the recent crypto market plunge and the Merge still on the horizon, the panel is divided on whether now is a good time to buy ethereum or not. 43% say now is a good time to buy, 41% hold and 16% sell. Digital Capital Management managing director Ben Ritchie – who has an end of year price prediction on par with the panel average and thinks ETH will be worth $10,000 by 2025 and $15k by 2030 – says now is a good time to buy ETH . “It is still too early for a proper valuation, but we can speculate on a valuation similar to

Increased demand raises concerns about Food Industry’s Energy Security

Image
Rising food demand and energy security issues stir up concerns as companies try to secure reliable power for production. Jan Eaman, business developer at Vattenfall, helps simmer down anxieties with a simple outsourcing solution. The last century has seen our global population quadruple, and increased food demand is putting significant pressure on the food and beverage industry. Many companies plan to increase investment in the coming years with a focus on production efficiency and automation, but production facilities require reliable power; and on the electrical side, the need for investment is large and growing. Most companies in the industry have old high-voltage installations, from the 1960s and ’70s, which often fall victim to power outages and are not very efficient. Jan Eaman, business developer at Vattenfall, explains: “Electricity supply is not often seen as a priority by a lot of businesses, but at the same time interruptions in production can quickly have costly conseq

Cardano to end the year at $0.63: A Price Predictions Report

Image
Cardano’s (ADA) end of year price prediction has been downgraded from $2.79 to just $0.63 by Finder.com’s panel of fintech specialists . The medium and longer term predictions are more bullish at $2.93 for the end of 2025 and $6.54 for the end of 2030 but are still significantly below forecasts made by the panel in January of this year. University of Brighton senior lecturer Paul Levy thinks ADA will be worth $0.5 at the end of the year and $5 by the end of 2025. “As a native token of a proof-of-stake blockchain with some firm inventor foundations, there is still a lot of potential in Cardano to challenge and even overtake Ethereum. Proof of stake is likely the future of most if not all crypto in the future. Cardano, despite current volatility, is well placed,” he said. CoinFlip founder and chairman Daniel Polotsky thinks ADA will be worth just $0.37 at year’s end and is part of the 48% who thinks it’s time to sell the token despite it being a popular layer one blockchain. “…its p

We love that wonderful feeling when we finally get away on holiday – a week or two of warm sunshine and cooling swims in the pool. But, while it’s the perfect stress-busting way to relax and unwind, it’s not always the best for our hair. The sun, sea, and wind can all dull and damage the strands, and nobody’s got time for tangled, knotty hair on holiday! Don’t even get us started on the effects of chlorine on our fabulous blonde highlights, either! But help is at hand. Kerry Capewell, who heads up the colour advice helpline for naturally-better haircare brand, Naturtint , shares its top tips for healthy, glossy summer hair. “Adopt your summer haircare routine before you go away,” she advises, ‘that way, your hair is in great condition ahead of the game. “it’s also a good idea to have a pre-holiday trim, so your hair is free from split ends, so you won’t be adding more damage to already weakened strands. “And, if you are addicted to swimming, try to shower before you get in.
